Prompts work wonders for me. I hope they work for you just as well. However, truth be told, prompts work wonders for me especially when I have to come up with them for someone else.
I know, this speaks volumes about how fucked up my brain is. I don’t know how it is, but I think that having to come up with prompts for someone else is a way to give myself permission to just write down whatever crosses my mind. In fact if I’m looking for prompts for myself I tend, wrongly, to exclude some perspectives. Instead, given I can’t know beforehand who is going to read these prompts, my inner critic is totally unable to get in the way.
Prompts for Horror and Fantasy Stories
The new dress Sophia is given for her birthday hides a secret. Maybe in its pockets. Or maybe in its fabric. Be that as it may, when Sophia tries it she feels…
The Only Regret
The only regret I had was about my smartphone. That morning I had forgotten to recharge it, and now during the funeral I could do nothing but lie still in my coffin while the others cried and followed the hearse.
A Bright Future?
The new TV is of a very special kind. It’s three-dimensional. But not like the others. I mean, it doesn’t show fictional three-dimensional images. It doesn’t mess with your senses. Instead, it’s the TV itself to be three-dimensional. For us, who have been living in a two-dimensional universe for something like forever, this is a real breakthrough. I’m now a believer and can’t wait for the day we’ll be doing the Spill Over.
Growing and Growing
The fertilizer Greg has bought is incredibly effective. Flowers and plants alike grow and bloom like they never did before. Then, one day working in the garden he cuts himself on the shoulder and instead of going to the hospital to have the cut stitched up, he slathers it with the fertilizer.
The morning after the cut is gone. But something seems to be growing just under the new skin.
Daniel is driving when he sees a cat crossing the road. With a mean smirk he presses hard on the gas and runs over it. The cat takes a couple of steps and then falls dead on the roadside.
Daniel drives on, satisfied. But then in the rear view he sees a woman walk up to the cat, turn to look in his direction, and then raise both her arms. He feels a sort of boom in his head. But distant, more like an echo.
That evening at home a fly keeps buzzing around him. With a snort he stands and goes into the kitchen to retrieve a swatter. It’s just a damn fly, but still…
Punching ball Economics
Ethan thinks his boss is a shithead full of himself. But he doesn’t have the balls to confront him and tell him to stop vexing him. One day a salesman rings at Ethan’s house and offers him a punching ball. Before Ethan could turn down the offer, the salesman tells him he can hit the thing thinking about his boss. And that if he does so, he would soon see some nice changes in his boss.
Somehow Ethan buys the punching ball and spends the evening jabbing at it. The day after in the morning when he arrives at work…
Bursting with Life
Liza buys a new set of oil color paints. She then closes in her studio. But as soon as she begins to work, the paints seem to be whispering her what to paint and where to paint it. So she ditches the canvas and begins working on the bare walls of her studio. She paints a sort of creature. She doesn’t know what it is. But the more she paints the more realistic it appears…
That’s it. I hope you find these prompts interesting. And if you have some of your own, share it in the comments.
